Shining Stars Celebrate!

After a year of selecting Shining Stars each month, last Saturday the winners got to celebrate in style at the Vision Charity Ball. This year’s theme was ‘Taste of the Orient’ as guests were treated to champagne reception, dinner in the Great Room and world class entertainment throughout the evening. The recognition scheme which champions those working in non-creative roles who have gone that extra mile has had fantastic support from you since it began in 2008. We have consistently received a high calibre of nominees (often making it very difficult to pick a winner!) working in wide ranging roles from Library manager, Engineer and Front of House to Production Assistant and Runner.

We’d like to congratulate all the winners and thank all those who nominated in 2009. Shining Stars 2010 will open in January so let us know about your amazing support teams.

2010 Working Groups

We now have a new schedule for next year’s working groups, so time to open up you crisp new diaries and make sure you have all the relevant dates pencilled in. These groups are open to all UK Screen members and are an opportunity to get together and work with your peers to address common industry issues and share information. If you don’t currently receive reminders about the Broadcast, Audio, Commercials, Film, Finance or SFX groups, but would like to attend these next year, please email us.

HMRC Review – TV & Film Guidelines

HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) is consulting industry groups concerning revisions to its film and television industry guidelines; this opportunity is unlikely to present itself again for some time.  The existing guidance notes can be found here.

One of the areas under review is Appendix 1 which details those grades in the industry for which PAYE need not be operated subject to fulfilling specific requirements shown in the list.  This is our opportunity to lobby for any new grades that should be included, or indeed for any changes that need to be made to the current qualifications and descriptions.

Another area under review is the tax treatment of expenses.

We have arranged a members briefing with representatives from the HMRC which will be held at 11.30am on Wednesday 20th January at the offices of Grant Thornton in Euston. Tea and coffee will be available from 11am. An early indication of interest in attending would be much appreciated.

If you would like to attend, please contact us
