What does IBC 2009 have in-store…

For those interested in numerology – and this is certainly the economic climate to be stroking crystal balls and looking in the bottom of teacups for inspiration – then the prevalence of the number 3 at this year’s IBC might prove significant as it apparently represents communication and interaction. For the rest of us in the rational world it will be all about 3DTV and 3G.

Sexy it perhaps isn’t, but this is the show where 3Gbps capability really hits the mainstream, with a host of manufacturers upgrading their infrastructure products to accommodate it. Whether now is the time to invest in 3G technology and take the hit on the additional cost is, of course, a slightly more complex argument. But with 1080p production an inevitability at some point in the not too distant future, it would be a brave decision to ignore it until the next upgrade cycle a few years hence.

US Producer FAM Trip – get involved!

With production executives confirmed from Disney, Fox, Dreamworks, Spyglass, Overture and HBO; this year’s US Familiarisation Trip looks set to be a big success.

Once again we will be contributing to the programme of events by hosting a post-production and services day in London on 7th October. This year in addition to promoting visual effects and audio facilities we would like to show the depth of expertise in other areas of our membership such as media management and equipment rental.

This is a great opportunity for member companies to come together and not only promote their company, but the UK as a whole. As this is only a month away now, it’s important that if you do want to get involved that you contact us a.s.a.p. gaynor@ukscreenassociation.co.uk

Merger Proposed For Flagship Film Bodies

Changes are afoot as the UK Film Council (UKFC) and the British Film Institute (BFI) announced plans to merge into a single body to support film could benefit both the film going public and the industry.

The overall remit of the BFI and UKFC will not be reduced, but will form a streamlined organisation, which can spend more of its money on film and services and less on infrastructure, and in turn offer better support for Britain's film culture and promotion of its film industry. Its remit would span securing investment across the sector, steering the industry through the transition to digital, championing the cultural importance of the UK's film heritage and guaranteeing that the full diversity of film culture is available to all.
